Mt. Rainier

Family Vacation 2026

Five curated itinerary options for your multi-generational group — toddlers through grandparents, all from Minnesota, exploring the Pacific Northwest for the first time.

Trip Overview

Why the Pacific Northwest?

Minnesota is beautiful, but the PNW offers things you simply can't get back home. These itineraries are built around experiences that will feel genuinely new and memorable.

Flight Booking Tip

The Iran conflict has driven jet fuel prices up ~90%, pushing airfares 18–100%+ higher on many routes. Once the conflict calms, book within 1–2 weeks of de-escalation news. For September travel, the ideal booking window under normal conditions is late June – mid-July 2026. Set a price alert on Google Flights for MSP → SEA.

Planning Advice

Tips for Your Group

Things to know before you go.

🚗
Carpooling logistics

With multiple families you will likely need 3+ vehicles. Coordinate before you go.

🦌
Northwest Trek is the sleeper hit

Right in Eatonville and universally loved by every age. Do not skip it.

🏔️
Paradise > Sunrise for mixed ages

Sunrise is stunning but 6,400 ft altitude tires small kids and seniors faster.

🚆
Seattle parking is painful

Park at a Link Light Rail station (Federal Way or Angle Lake) and ride in, or take the Sounder from Tacoma.

⛴️
Bainbridge Ferry tip

Walk-on passengers pay ~$9/adult, kids under 6 free. Leave cars in Seattle and explore Bainbridge on foot.

🌬️
Ocean Shores in September

Fewer crowds and dramatic coastal weather. Bring layers — it's cooler and windier than inland.

🐟
Pike Place pro tip

Go early (before 10am) to see the fish throwers before the crowds hit. The kids will love it.

🌦️
September PNW weather

Expect highs in the mid-60s°F. Pack layers and a light rain jacket. Rainier weather can change within the hour.

🎫
No timed-entry passes needed

Mt. Rainier does not require timed-entry reservations in 2026. Arrive early on weekends.

🦀
Fresh seafood to try

Dungeness crab, Pacific salmon, Manila clams, Puget Sound oysters. Nothing like this back in MN.
